Spring Decor and Decorating with a Bird Cage

Happy spring!  Wow, even though the sun is shining and it is a gorgeous day, it is cold here.  Yesterday morning, we had 40 mph winds, and it sounded like our roof was going to rip off.  The wind calmed down some, but blew hard all day.  As I type this, the wind is howling once again!  There goes my Spring Break yard work for a few days anyway.

Even though it's cold outside,  I've been working on bringing a little spring into a few rooms of my house.  I started with my grandmother's vintage table that I love decorating for each season.  Please bear with me as I figure out exactly how to use my new camera!  Oh, I love it, but have so much to learn.  I literally have taken over a hundred photos of this table to play with the settings.  Now, I can't find where my computer hid some of them.  I have to read up on that, too!!

Spring Decor with cloches and a bird cage, eggs, bird's nest, wire cloche, Annie Sloan Emperor's Red Silk with gold gilding wax

I have been so excited to decorate with my bird cage that I bought from Amazon a few months ago.   It came with a smaller one that my daughter is using in her room.  I had wanted that cage for awhile.  So when I won a $25 Amazon gift card on a blog giveaway, I knew what I was going to use it on.  The pair of cages were more than I wanted to spend, but the gift card made a huge difference.

There was only one thing that bugged me about it (minus the price) was the reviews on it. Many complained about the color or the finish.  Since I loved the shape and style, I decided I could slap some paint on them if I didn't like the finish.  After receiving the cages, I do understand why one customer returned them for an awful finish!   It could use some work, but I love it anyway!  The yellow helped to brighten up the dark table.   I just haven't had time to smooth that finish, yet.  I really thought rubbing on a little Annie Sloan dark wax would do the trick to even out the finish, but it didn't.  You can see for yourself on the up close photos.

spring decor with bird cage, butterfly tea pitcher, roses, wire cloche, eggs
Here is the top view.  I probably should have done a better job of hiding that wire on the bird.  : )

spring decor with bird cage, butterfly tea pitcher, roses

Lovely finish, huh?  Thank goodness it really doesn't look bad from a distance.

butterfly tea pitcher
I filled one of my grandmother's many pitchers that I hoarded, and filled it with some of my estate sale roses I told you about a few weeks ago.  The pitcher was the perfect addition for spring decor.

spring decor with bird cage, butterfly tea pitcher,
I tossed in a few eggs in the bottom of the cage.

vintage cup and saucer, bird's nest, English Chippendale
I found this vintage English Chippendale over-sized cup and saucer at an estate sale a few weeks ago for $2.   It was the perfect color for my red table.  I loved it so much, I decided I would check Ebay for a few more pieces.  Oh, I found a gorgeous teapot to match, but at $300 I'll be happy with just the cup and saucer!  I filled the cup full of shredded brown construction paper, and added a bird's nest and bird that I purchased at Hobby Lobby.

wire cloches, cloches, spring decor, eggs
I also had been eyeing these wire cloches on Ebay, and finally gave in and made them mine.

spring decor, cloche with candle with flowers and eggs
I placed a few flowers on the candle with sticky dots and put some raffia with birds eggs around the base of the candle.

Spring decor, cloche, eggs, floral
I added a few more larger speckled eggs to my gold tray.

ideas to display eggs, handpainted floral egg
I put my grandmother's floral egg on a brass candlestick holder.

spring floral arrangement, cloches, eggs
I also changed out my fall flowers for some lighter colored ones in my floral arrangement.

Don't fret about the finish, because it looks lovely as is. Kind of a weathered imperfection, which warms my heart. Your table is really lovely, Kathy. And the vignette atop it flows nicely.

XOXO,
Meredith

What a lovely vignette! The bird cage is a great shape, I can see why you wanted it so badly. Finish doesn't matter because it's changeable so the complaints must have come from "uncrafty" people! I stopped by from Cuddlebug Cuties Sunday Linky party.

Kathy, the birdhouse is beautiful! Who cares about the finish, I know you can make it look wonderful. But it doesn't look that bad in the photo.
