Chevron and Emperor's Silk Chalk Paint Bench Makeover

Today I am sharing my bench makeover.  This bench has been sitting behind my couch for months now.  My daughter originally bought this for her room at an estate sale.  In the meantime, she bought a vanity for her room and decided she didn't want the bench.  It was in excellent condition, but needed a fabric update.

I am still looking for the perfect dresser or entry table to makeover for this spot behind my couch.  Until I find that perfect piece, this bench works great there.  My daughter was with me when I picked out the fabric.  I wasn't positive I wanted to go with such a busy fabric, but it matched my Emperor's Silk Chalk Paint table perfectly.  It also definitely gave a pop of color to the dark couch.

Here is the bench before the makeover.  If the fabric hadn't been so faded, I probably would have left it the way we bought it.  I still haven't added the buttons to the bench, yet.  I am still debating on the major task.

Chevron and Annie Sloan Emperor's Silk Bench Makeover

To keep the legs from blending in with my brown couch, I decided to do a dry paint and wax brush using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Emperor's Silk.  I am amazed at the amount of projects I have finished using that one can of paint, and there is still paint left.  It may be more expensive, but it goes a very long way.

Mr. Ed loves nothing better than to start a new project.  He is always so much help as you can see!

Chevron and Annie Sloan Emperor's Silk Bench Makeover, how-to paint with chalk paint

I am still working on getting the perfect setting on my new camera.  One of my top priorities for my summer vacation which starts in less than two weeks!!   I wanted some of the brown to show through the paint, so I poured a small amount of paint on a piece of wax paper.  I mixed Annie Sloan clear wax with the paint and very sparingly brushed it on.   I only added one coat, and let it dry overnight.

Here is the bottom of the seat after I recovered it.  It was a pain to pull all of those buttons out.  I didn't want to damage them in case I decide to use them later on the bench.

Here is a close up of the legs after I gave them a light coat of paint.  I didn't want too much red with the busy fabric.

how to makeover a bench using chevron fabric and chalk paint

The hardest part of using the chevron print was to make sure I had it perfectly straight.  The corners are not perfect, but that's the best I could do without pulling out the needle and thread.

Chevron and Annie Sloan Emperor's Silk Bench Makeover

After months of looking at this unfinished project, I am so glad I can mark it off my to-do list.      I have just enough fabric left to make a few chevron pillows for some chairs that are near the bench.  Chevron is definitely the way to go if you want to give a bold look to a lifeless piece of furniture.  It definitely catches your eye the minute you walk in the door.

The bench makeover totally wore Mr. Ed out.  Nothing better than a nap after completing a project.  :)

Thank you so much for stopping by and checking out my new bench.  I always love your visits, and your comments make my day!  Have a wonderful week!

Mother's Day Organizer Part Two

Here is the Part Two of the Mother's Day recipe and magazine clippings album that I promised a few weeks ago.  If you missed Part One of the inside of the album, you can see that post here.  I shared how I covered the album, and what I included on the inside to organize favorite articles and clippings.

DIY Storage Organizer for Magazine clippings, Mother's Day gift idea

I made the flowers from the same fabric that I used to cover the album.  To make sure I had the exact color white for the flowers, I simple used the back side of the printed fabric.

DIY Storage Organizer for Magazine clippings , fabric

To make the flowers, I cut 4 inch wide strips of fabric about 12 inches long.  I used a slightly larger piece of fabric for the flower on the bottom.

how to make fabric flower rosettes, tutorial

Fold the fabric piece in half and very tightly sew the sides together.

I continually  gathered the fabric on the thread as I sewed the piece together.

It begins to form the rosette as the fabric is bunched together.

Once I reached the end of the fabric, I stitched the end piece together and tied off the thread.

I also put a few stitches in the middle of the flower to hold it together and keep its shape.

I glued the flowers onto the album using my glue gun.  Here is what they looked like before I added the buttons.

DIY Fabric organizer, tutorial, how to, rosettes

I have a huge collection of my grandmother's old buttons, so I dug through those until I found two that worked with the fabric.  That just gave it an extra special touch!

Here is a close up of the first flower.  I wish I could have found two of those buttons.

I had to go with this button for the second flower.  All of those blue buttons, and this was the only other one I could find that worked!

I thought it still needed something else, so I added the blue ribbon.  I also placed a piece of scrapbooking applique on the ribbon.  My daughter said the applique needs to go!  It's there to stay unless I find something else to replace it.   LOL

DIY Storage Organizer using library pockets and binder

Here is one more look at the inside of the album.  I added many clear protectors to each section.  I have some blue folders  to put in the back for extra storage.

More than a week later, I am finally sharing the final project.  I am so  sorry it has taken me this long to get it posted.   Have a wonderful week, and thank you so much for stopping by for a visit!
