ASCP Emperor's Red Table Makeover

This is one of the first tables that I painted using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  I am just now getting around to posting it.  I used Emperor's Red and gilding wax in gold.  It also belonged to my grandmother.  She had a house full of beautiful furniture, and I am so thankful to keep it living on in my house.

I used GedeO Gilding Wax on the trim of the table.  This wax is so easy to use, and I have completed so many projects with this little jar!

gold gilding wax

I also used the gilding wax on the hardware so the trim would be an exact match.

Since the table was done before I ever thought about actually blogging, I don't have the before picture.  This is also the only time I have actually sanded a piece of furniture before using the chalk paint.  I only sanded the top.  As long as I can remember, this table sat in front of my grandparent's picture window with a lamp on it.  The sun had faded all of the top except for the circle where the lamp sat.  I wanted to make sure that the raised circle didn't show.

Since I wanted a deeper red on the table, I did use the dark wax after a coat of clear wax.

Here lately I have been reading a few posts questioning the use of chalk paint because it is a bit pricey.  This is the fourth project that I have finished using the Emperor's Red, and the can is just now a little less than half full.  I put three coats on this table and on the other projects.  If you missed my post on using the red paint and Wood Icing, you can find it here.

This picture was taken during the day with the sun pouring in the window, but the red shows up much better.

In the picture below you can see how the dark wax gets in the paint brush strokes and gives it a rich color and really tones down the red.

Now that I have finished this table, I see another project in the near future.  My chairs worked great when the table had a dark finish, but now I'm thinking either new chairs or chair covers.  :)  At least add some red pillows.  When it comes to decorating, do we ever get finished?

I also have to get curtains or valances for my living room.  I cannot make up my mind what I want, and with eight windows in this room it won't be cheap.  Yet, another project.  LOL

Hi Kathy, Thanks for your sweet comments and following. I am following you right back. Yes, school starts for me Tuesday, too, and kids come a week after that. I am a high school Science teacher. What about you? Well, now we can email each other and giggle when we get a snow day!

I love your table, am trying to figure out where I can put something red. That little drawer? My mom had a similar table when I was 3. I put my parakeet in it and shut the drawer! That bird lived for 17 years, and always tried to bite me......

Kathy,

I think your table looks fantastic! I love the red and was thinking I might make the Emperor Red my next ASCP. A little goes a long way when using this paint I usually give everything at least 2 and sometimes 3 coats depending on the color and this paint goes along way. I even painted the lid of a jar I had that was metal and it covered perfectly.

My mother and grandmother had a table just like the one in your photo. I believe my sister still has my mom's. The drawer was missing but she covered the table with a lovely tablecloth. :) Great job on the table!

You are cracking me up with your parakeet story. That is too funny. I can't believe it lived for 17 years. Wow! That's a long time to fight off a bird. :)

Looking forward to visiting with you! HUGS

Kathy, that red table is just fabulous! You know, I've been wanting to paint and accent table or my son's dresser a deep red for the longest time but fear of it looking like a big old firetruck has held me back... I so love the way your table turned out I think I'll just have to give it a whirl! PS... I love the way you accented and displayed your pretties on you table, I like the chairs as they are as well, but see your point about a nice beautiful accent pillow on one or both! Thanks for linking up this week with T4
