Pine Cones & Pumpkins Fireplace Garland

Hi, awesome friends!  Today I am sharing with you my pine cones and pumpkins garland that I made for my mantel.  I told you earlier that I love everything about my house except the fireplaces.  I'll share a little more about that at the end of this post.  Putting a garland of leaves only on my mantel gets lost.  So I had to get creative and make it larger.

alt=" Pine Cone & Pumpkins Garland Tutorial"

Here's a few up close photos that I took outside.

alt=" Pine Cone & Pumpkins Garland Tutorial"

First, I started with this wide yarn.

alt=" Pine Cone & Pumpkins Garland Tutorial"

I attached the stems of the pumpkins with floral wire.  I also attached the pine cones with floral wire, but I wrapped it around the inside of each one.

alt=" Pine Cone & Pumpkins Garland Tutorial"

After I had the amount of each that I wanted, I tied scraps of material that I had on the yarn.  Super easy, but slightly time-consuming.

alt=" Pine Cone & Pumpkins Garland Tutorial"

Once I had all of that completed, I made different bows for all of the pumpkins and pine cones.  I used floral pins to attach to the pumpkins, and hot glued the bows to the pine cones.  I punched holes in single leaves with a floral pin.   Then I used a much lighter floral wire and  attached it through the holes.

alt=" Pine Cone & Pumpkins Garland Tutorial"

I attached several leaves on some wire, and a single leaf on the others.  I bent the wire just enough to keep the leaves separated.

Sorry for this extra long post, but while I'm on the subject of my fireplace I will share my temporary fix until we build a bookcase and a real mantel around it.

When we looked at this house for the first time, the fireplace stuck out like a sore thumb.   It just looked like a big box surrounded by windows.  Seriously, what was the builder thinking???  It gets even better, too!  We have one in our bedroom that is identical to this one, except it only has a window above it.  Our house was built to take advantage of the lake views.  So my family room has 9 windows.  I really need to get curtains on these windows, but I just can't decide what I want to do yet.

Here is a photo I took with my phone the other night when I was cleaning the mantel, before I added the fall decor.  To draw attention away from the fireplace, I made a huge floral arrangement.  You really can't tell just how large it is from the pics.  It's a biggie, and took me several days and way too much money to make it!!!

alt=" Pine Cone & Pumpkins Garland Tutorial"

Now when you walk in the room, you really don't notice the fireplace.  The garland did add a nice touch of color.  My hubby wasn't impressed with my idea when I started, but he actually loves it.

Thank you so much for visiting, and sticking with my longer than usual post!  I had so much fun working with the leaves and wire, that I also made a door hanger that I will try to post soon.  Have a wonderful weekend.

  2. That is one huge floral arrangement! I can only imagine how much work all that was! I have 9 windows in my family room too! I wish we looked out at a lake though. It's a wooded view, which is pretty, but water is definitely the bestest! I've never seen a fireplace built with windows above it. I can understand it might be challenging to decorate. Usually something like artwork goes above a fireplace, or more likely tv's, these days, (which I'm not a fan of). I would love to see that lake of yours Kathy! Have a relaxing weekend. As for me, I'll be trying to figure out what I can do for your link party! Lol
