Fall Faux Cupcake Designs

Do you wish you could keep cupcakes in your cupcake holders?  We have a problem around my house!  If I bake anything there's a very good chance it will not be there the next morning.  Food disappears over night around here.  I have these cute little mini cupcake stands that I love, and wanted to put cupcakes in them. First, let me share how I came up with this project.

alt="Fall Faux Cupcake tutorial Decor Mini Cupcake stands"

To make a long story short, our front door glass was broken by a rock thrown from a weed eater by our HOA lawn service.  One tiny hole cracked the glass from top to bottom.  It crackled for 30 minutes.   Of course it was on a Saturday, and the glass service couldn't come until Monday.  We went to Home Depot, and found supplies to keep the 100 degree heat outside.  Here is one of the products we bought.

It cost about $3.50 and will make a lot of fun projects.  I have found there is not one type of glue that will hold this foam.  Heavy floral wire works perfect, though!

alt="Fall Faux Cupcake tutorial Decor Mini Cupcake stands"

Cut the foam, and layer it on top of each other until you get the shape you are happy with.  This is the tricky part, the foam can be stubborn.  Once you have the shape you like, run the floral wire through the inside of the layers.  I used four wires to make sure the shape stayed in place.

When you are happy with the shape, snip the wire and bend it back into the foam.  This secures the shape.  I left the wire longer in the photo for a visual, but shorter wire is much easier to use.  You just need a very small piece to bend back into the foam.

Repeat the same process on the top.  I made the top of each of these different.  Some I tucked the foam inside and the others I just left a layer with a slanted edge.

Now for the fun part, decorating the "cupcakes".  I did use Folk Art paint for the candy corn cupcake, and it hasn't peeled.  I do plan on spraying it with a clear protective coat.   Spray paint for plastic works best on the foam.  I used Krylon spray paint that works on plastic for the others.

I used Folk Art acrylic paint on this one, and added a sugar pumpkin.

This one is white Krylon paint that can be used for plastic.  I went a little crazy with the pumpkins!  :)

More Krylon paint with chocolate sprinkles.

I used a gold glitter pen on this one and added one of my favorite fall pumpkins!  I spread glitter on the rest of it using a paintbrush.

Here's a little sneak peek of one that I made for Christmas.

I realize this is not your everyday craft activity, but I had way too much of this stuff to throw away.  :)  I also  have a guest post coming up soon in which I share some fun Christmas decorations that I made using the foam.  Can't wait for you to see those.  Thanks so much for visiting!

  2. Hi Kathy! They look good enough to eat! Thanks for sharing the terrific idea! I want to try this project. Did you ever have trouble with the paint "eating" the foam?

    1. Thanks so much! My husband said they make him hungry. LOL I didn't have any trouble with the paint eating the foam, but some of the glues I tried did. I was about to throw in the towel when it hit me to use the floral wire. Once I painted them, the glue would stick. Have fun! Thanks so much for stopping by. Hugs

  7. I really enjoyed your post. I can't even get my cupcakes decorated in my house before they are eaten. I watch Cupcake Wars every week and wish I could make those beautiful cakes. This is a great way to make the pretties and "trick" the family. If I burn a cake candle and have these ready to go - that would be a go Halloween trick too! Ha. Keep up the good work. Found you on DIY Home Sweet Home linky party.
