ASCP Sewing Machine Table Makeover

I finally got around to marking off another summer project on my to do list. I couldn't part with my grandmother's sewing machine, so I decided to use it to fill in the space for a needed table on the landing of my stairs.

ASCP Sewing Machine Makeover Tutorial, ASCP Coco, Old Ochre, dark wax

Here is the before picture.

ASCP Sewing Machine Makeover Tutorial, ASCP Coco

A while back, I purchased this picture at an estate sale.  I paid $20 for it.  When I got it home, I realized it still had the Kirkland's price tag on the back for $200!  That's why I love estate sales!!!    I wanted to match the paint on the table to the frame around the picture.    I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Coco and Old Ochre.    I decided to use the picture frame design on top of the desk.  Because there are many color variations in the frame, I mixed the two colors for the top and the drawer, while using the Coco on the the rest of the table.

First, I painted the base of the table with the Coco, and then I painted the mixed paints on the top and the drawer.  Then comes the tricky part!  Taping off the design.

I left 2 inches between each square, and then I placed the dots in the center of each square.  Lining up the stickers evenly was the hardest part of the whole process!

IMPORTANT tip on using the dots!!  I have used the stickers before to paint polka dots.  To make sure they peeled off easily, I kept sticking them to an old shirt until they weren't too sticky.  This makes the project so much faster and easier when it's time to peel those stickers off.

Here it is all decked out in the colorful stickers.  :)

Because I was trying to match the colors in the picture, I did more of a dry brush than a fully loaded paint brush.  The picture below shows the 2 dots after being pulled off.

The fun (or is it scary?) part is pulling off all the tape and stickers, to see if the design in your head actually worked on the table.  Here is the completed table top.  I do love it, but I do wish I had put the tape about a half inch closer.

I was amazed how much that little design added to the landing.  I have tried for several days to get better pictures, but I decided that wasn't going to happen.  There is a skylight right above the table.  It's too bright in the day, and too dark at night.  So I've added a few day and night pictures.  :)

I did stick with the clear wax on this project.  I love the dark wax, but I wanted to stick with the lighter color.

Do you have a picture of her machine? My grandmothers table is in the attic and admittedly not as pretty as your's, but I love her machine which you can see in my post. Thanks again and I'm a new follower!

  11. Hi Kathy!
Your table turned out fantastic! I would love to do something like this! BUT! although my 'kids' have moved out, I have a messy hubby! who would think nothing to knocking, dinging, or setting something harsh on my newly painted table top!
we just redone a dresser for our TV entertainment system, and I opted not to do the top (laminate) and I am SOO glad I didn't try to paint it, because with in 5 mins of bringing it into the living room, he was moving, setting up, and dinging away on it LOL men!!!
You have a nice page here, lots of inspiring post.
