DIY Moss Bunny and Roses Centerpiece

I tried very hard to get my moss bunny and roses arrangement posted before Easter, but my Spring Break did not go as planned!  The good thing about this centerpiece is that I plan to leave it out as part of my spring decor.

I still have lots of flowers that I bought super cheap at an estate sale, and I wanted to use some more of  them for a spring centerpiece.   These are the same roses I used in my bird cage arrangement.   I also picked up this bunny at the same estate sale for fifty cents.

Moss Bunny and Roses in Urn Centerpiece, tutorial, diy, floral arrangement, Easter

My daughter was with me when I bought it,  and she has made fun of his red eyes since I put him in the car.  She actually moved him to the backseat.  Something about really old dolls and red glowing bunny eyes creep her out!  As a joke, she hid him from me in the house because she didn't like looking at evil bunny.

how to add moss to a rabbit

When I saw the live ivy and moss covered bunny in the Pottery Barn catalog, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this little bunny.

Spanish Moss
I looked everywhere in town for a roll of moss, but couldn't find any.  I decided to order some from Hobby Lobby, and they were out of stock.  Moss is definitely the hot item this spring!

Since I couldn't find any of the rolls, I bought a bag of Spanish Moss.  I cut the moss with scissors, and then I cut some more.  That was the most tedious part of the whole project.

Elmer's Spray Adhesive Glue

I decided to use Elmer's Spray Adhesive Glue for this project.  It worked pretty well.  Once I had all of the moss cut, I was ready to begin covering those glowing eyes.  I sprayed one small section at a time and added the moss.

Once I had applied the moss, I gave it another light spray of glue and moved on to the next section.  I did this until the rabbit was covered.

how to a moss a bunny, moss, tutorial, diy

Here is Mr. Bunny after I had completely covered him and applied once last misting of glue all over the entire bunny.   He was looking a tad bit scraggly at this point!   Sorry I didn't take any photos during the process.

If you have ever worked with this spray adhesive you know why I didn't get near my camera with it.  It makes your fingers very sticky and is a pain to remove from your fingers.  Vegetable oil always seem to work the best for removing the glue from hands and fingers.

Once the glue was almost dry, I was able to firmly pack the moss on it.  I even trimmed it with scissors in a few places.

roses in urn tutorial

I got one of my favorite urns from my deck and filled it with potting soil.  I placed paper towels over the soil, and then added my roses that I had removed from the stems.  The wires on some of the roses were too short, so I wrapped some floral wire around them to hold in place.

urn with roses

Here's a side view half filled with the roses.

Moss Bunny and Roses in Urn Centerpiece, tutorial, diy, floral arrangement, Easter

I covered the top of the urn and the rose stems with moss.

I did take a photo before I "mossed" the bunny to see if I wanted to use it this way.  Since I had my mind set on adding the moss, I decided to go for it.
Moss Bunny and Roses in Urn Centerpiece, tutorial, diy, floral arrangement, Easter

I'm glad I added the moss.   I love the contrast between the moss and roses.  It was a super easy project to make, but I think a roll of moss would have been much easier.   He has found a new home in my in my entry way.

Thank you so much for stopping by for a visit!  I love hearing from you.  Your comments make my day!  Have a wonderful, crafty week.

I have to agree with your daughter about the eyes...he was a little creepy! However, I love his new look, but did you remove the eyes first or are they lurking under that moss?

Nice looking centerpiece in the end!

Thanks for sharing!

Just Lovely Kathy!!
I think it will be perfect right up until fall. When aren't bunnies just perfect? Funny, he actually didn't look bad 'naked' :) Though I would have painted his eyes blue or something for sure. Or you could have distressed painted him to go with the pot. But...mossy is best!! Yup. Perfect!

The bunny really came out so cute...and the arrangement is beautiful! I was planning on doing this to two bunnies and never got around to it...nice to see how cute the can be...when I finally get around to it. Great idea to use for your spring decor...maybe I will do mine now instead of next Easter.

I think EVERYONE is glad you mossed that bunny...especially your daughter!!! :-) Wow...that was one creepy stare that dude was giving up! Reminds me of the U.S. Postal Service commercial with the creepy clown doll! :-)

You did a MAGNIFICENT job on this! I'm sure it took a bit of patience and created a teensy bit of a mess, but the results are so worth it! It looks terrific! I'm glad you'll get continued use of it throughout the remainder of Spring!

Visiting from Jessica's New Creation blog party. Have a wonderful day!
