A Chair Makeover and My Cat Ed

I rescued this chair from my aunt's storage building.  It had belonged to my grandparents, and she didn't want to get rid of it.  So she stuck it in storage.  I claimed it the minute  I laid eyes on it.  I love the shape and size of the chair, and the pattern on the back.  It's a vintage from Tell City.  It's made of Mahogany and so heavy.  I had forgotten just how heavy, until I attempted to take it to my deck for some outside photos.

Other than the arms being worn out, it was in excellent shape.  I had purchased some fabric for a totally different project, but the more I looked at it I decided I would cover the chair with it.  I have read lots of tutorials on reupholstering, but I mostly just winged this one!!  :)  So this post is mostly a before and after.   It involved lots of staples, patience and the glue gun.  Here is the after!

The fabric is such a busy pattern, that it's hard to get a clear picture.   Below is a few close up pictures of the fabric.

Here you can clearly see the difference between inside and outside photo shots.

I also added brown trim and gold nail heads around the arms.

To break up the fabric pattern, I decided to add the trim around the seat.  I love the cute little fringe  at the bottom.

I did paint the legs and the arms of the chair with Martha Stewarts's Metallic Bronze.

I really wanted to add nail heads on the back, but this is where I ended up going with the glue gun and a few nail heads above the legs.

Now to share a funny little story with you, and introduce to our kitty, Mr. Ed.  Actually, we named him after Eddie from Christmas Vacation. If you are a fan of that movie (it's our yearly tradition) you know exactly who and what I'm talking about it.  LOL  This cat always keeps us entertained, and is always into something.   I finally learned my lesson, and stopped his midnight parties.  He would open the cabinet, tear open the bag of catfood, and happily share his food with the dog.  His food now stays in containers!!!

He laid claim to this chair the day I brought it home.  He loves to sleep in it.  So he was not very happy when I decided to redo it.  The two pictures below are blurry, because I grabbed my phone to take a picture.  He  seriously was attacking me, and not happy at all that I was touching his chair.

He throws a mean right hook to protect his territory!!!  I still have the scars to prove it.  :)

Dear friends I will leave you with the king on his throne.  He approves of his new chair, and don't even think about trying to sit in it.  LOL

Thank you so much for stopping by.  You make my day with your visits!  :)

                                                                        Kathy

OMG - you really did that???? I can't tell you how impressed I am! It's stunning, truly it is. I have three ottomans, an overstuffed chair and a divan wanting new upholstery but I am so intimidated at the thought of upholstering them. AND I took a class at JoAnn's to learn!!!

And I love Ed! We have a Mike that pretty much does as he pleases, too. They sure are bossy, aren't they?

Thanks for the inspiration. I am pinning this just to keep reminding me that I can probably do this.

Wow, this is a professional reupholstering job! You are very talented. The trim looks wonderful with the fabric and the color of the arms/legs. You're welcome to come here anytime and help me do an antique sofa!

Kathy,

You did a fantastic job on the chair. The fabric you selected is absolutely gorgeous and fits the chair beautifully. How on earth were you able to keep the pattern straight? I wouldn't have a clue on how to go about reupholstering a chair! The best I can do is a chair seat! HA

Beautifully done...Bravo!

Oh,thank you so much! I promise you, I really had no idea what I was doing at first. Definitely learned a lot in the process. My glue gun is my new best friend. :) It helped knowing the chair couldn't look any worse. LOL Go for it!!! You can do it! Thanks for pinning it!

I so admire you for tackling that chair! I've dabbled in upholstery, but haven't taken on anything that hard yet. You did a great job, and that fabric is just lovely.

Anonymous said...

I am so jealous! I have an old chair of my grandmother's that has a similar fan-like back. How did you get the beautiful lines on the back to form the fan shape? I threw a slipcover over mine until I get brave enough to tackle it. The back has me stumped.

Oh...and my cats love that chair, too. Must be the curved back seems like a hug to them!

You did a beautiful job!

Hi Kathy
That chair is awesome Kathy!! You did a fabulous job on it and what a great choice for fabric. I love it! I can't even imagine being able to reupholster a chair using tutorials. I've thought about it before but I don't think it would be a good job. Love it.

I had to chuckle about your kitty. He still likes the chair after you've changed its appearance..and he's pretty adament about it too...cute. I hope he won't scratch it though....nooooo scratching kitty!

have a great week.

WOW! If I ever need a chair reupholstered, I 'm bringing it to you! I am in love with that fabric and your trim and paint on the legs, just blend perfectly! What makes your chair even more special is that you saved a family heirloom from sitting in storage! By the way, my Penelope rips into her food bag when she can reach it and it has to be stored in plastic containers too! She also drinks from the bathtub faucet. Cats are so quirky!

Hi Kathy

I am SO delighted to meet you - thanks for stopping by! I am glad you like my Fried Corn Recipe - it has quickly become one of my summertime faves!

You did an amazing job of upholstering your chair! I would love for you to share this with us at Inpsire Me Monday, my week-long creative party!

I also got a kick out of your very territotial cat! If you drop by my Wordless Wednesday party, you will get to meet Legend, one of my two Maine Coon cats! Legend is also very territorial and has ripped my office chair to shreds (not intentionally though - he likes to jump from the floor to the top of the chair when I am sitting at my computer to hang out with me which causes me to jump and him to grab on with his very deep claws when the chair swivels!)

My other cat, Tsunami, likes to take over all of our chairs and pretends he doesn't hear us when we come to sit down - he refuses to make eye contact since he knows we want our seat - cats are SO funny!

Anyway, have a fabulous day and I look forward to getting to know you!

Hi Kathy! What a beautiful job! I have a shell-back/channel-back chair that was my grandmother's and I had it reupholstered a few years ago. I never would have had the guts to have tried it myself. LOL The closest I've ever come to that, is a few dining room chair seats here and there. Stopping by from the block party hop and newly following you. Have a great rest of the week and an awesome weekend! ~Mary

Hi! Sorry I'm just now getting back to you! Still trying to catch up from vacation. To make things easier, (if there is an easy) LOL when you remove the old material cut out the new from that pattern. I did the bottom and the sides, and save the back for last. I stapled everything except the lines in the back of the chair. That's where I cheated and used my glue gun!! I used the side of a pair of scissors to push the material into the grooves. That made is so much easier. You can also do a search Youtube. They have some great videos to help get you started. :)

Thank you so much sweet friend!! You are awesome. So glad you always share your very valuable info! Learned so much from you!!!! XOXOXO

Wow my I am impressed, for not having upholstered before you are pretty darn good at it. I have two chairs sitting waiting for me to redo for over a year, you have inspired me! I love the fabric you used on the chair! I do feel bad for you you won't be able to sit on it since the king has claimed it as his. He is adorable though. So glad you shared your creative inspiration with Sunday’s Best – your creativity helped make the party a success!

Unknown said...

Awww, thank you so much! You can do it!! I found that material on the half price table so that really motivated me. LOL The only time we can get near it is when the king is outside. :)

Thank you so much for your kind words. Can't wait to see your chairs. XOXOXO

This chair looks great! I have been wanting to try my hand at upholstering, but I just haven't had the chance yet. I love your fabric!! And I have a bossy cat, too! While reading blogs he wanted on my lap, I told him no, and he promptly went to the end table and knocked my fingernail polish off! He was gonna show me! lol!!

Unknown said...

Thank you so much! I'm going now! Thanks for stopping by, too! :)

Unknown said...

Thank you so much! I was so excited to get my fabric on the half price table, which made it even better. :)

Oh, how I can relate to your cat stories. We were gone for vacation a few weeks ago. My parents and in-laws were feeding him and my dog. The day before we came home, my mother-in-law called to warn me.....I guess the cat was getting very upset and went crazy in my kitchen. LOL Every cabinet was open, and he broke my favorite small cake pedestal. I guess he was trying to teach us to not leave him alone again!!

Thank you so much for stopping by!

An intriguing discussion may be worth comment. I’m sure you should write much more about this topic, may well be described as a taboo subject but generally folks are too little to chat on such topics. An additional. Cheers 메이저토토사이트
